          Description
On the first Earth Day in 1970. millions of people across the United States rallied against pollution. The event soon developed into an annual tradition. As time goes on. teaching children about the environment becomes a priority. and the annual celebration also provides an opportunity for businesses to showcase new goods and services that are environmentally conscious.

Today. Earth Day remains a high-profile day for people around the world to recognize the importance of our planet and the impact of its environmental footprint. The Earth Day Forever stamp reminds sender and recipient that we share Earth's atmosphere.

The Earth Day Forever stamps are issued in booklets of 20 stamps. Art director Antonio Alcalá created the Earth painting using gouache on watercolor paper. The design features small green lines surrounding the blue planet. The title of the stamp runs across the top. with the words Forever and USA appearing at the bottom.

In the 1950s and 1960s. as the dangers of pollution became a widespread concern. there was a surge of support for celebrating Earth Day. It gained further attention in 1969 after what was then the largest oil spill in U.S. history off the coast of Santa Barbara. California.

Shortly after the spill. conservationist Senator Gaylord Nelson (D-WI). who supports legislation to protect natural resources. is determined to unite the nation around environmental causes. Senator Nelson has inspired thousands of people to organize environmental talks at colleges. schools and community centers across the country. April 22. between college spring break and final exams. was chosen as a national day of observance.
